Research /Case Studies

1. Jhene Aiko- Comfort Inn Ending Freestyle (21/8/2013)
  • Genre: R&B/Soul/Hip-Hop
  • Channel: Youtube/Vevo
Synopsis
In the song Jhene is talking in first person expressing her thoughts on a failed relationship explaining how the man in question led her on in a very sensitive and vulnerable time in her life.

This video is narrative as it tells the story of her reaction after the actual incident however talking in first person means that visually what the audience see's in the video can all be images and thoughts going on in Jhene's head.

She plays the main character, presumably re-enacting possible scenario's that took in her personal life however there is no lip sinking or performance shots linking back to the assumption that the images we see are all in her head and the actual track we are listening to is her speaking aloud to herself.

The use of a fast pace shot into super slow motion in the second scene where she scratches the porshe of the cheater shows exagerates the impact and adds the the emotion of the song. The use of the super slow motion is post modern as is not realistic but engages the audience. Camera angles include close up and mid close up shots to show emotion and facial expression, cut aways to show gesture and action in scenes where she is taking down clothes from his closet and his jewelry and special effects such as the fire that burnes the pile of designer clothing which represents the distruction of something good.

Her target audience are females that have been in relationships which have gone sour as judging from the lyrics of the song it is a personal experience she is talking about in the music video and they are encouraged to buy the record the promotion of her album via itunes link on youtube.

I like the idea of the slow motion effects as our song is fairly slow and we also want to exagerate on facial expression and emotion. I also like the fact that there were no performance shots or lipsinking and it gave the perseption that we were in the mind of the artist and would also like to keep lipsinking to a minimal and let the story speak for itself however i do think if there is no lipsinking the audience may find it very boring.

 2. Keyshia Cole- Trust and Beilieve (8/11/12)
  • Genre: R&B
  • Channel: Youtube/ Vevo
  • Produced by: DJ Camper
Synopsis
The heartfelt ballad reflects on Keyshia Coles position, with being cheated on by her ex-boyfriend with her bestfriend.

This music video is also a narrative as it compiles of flash backs and present situations of how keyshia (who is the main character in the video) stood by her man when he was no body and when he became omeone in life betreyed her trust and loyalty.

In the performance shots of her lipsinking she is portrayed as confident, strong and sings facing the camera as if she was talking directly to the viewer. This video is post modern howver follows conventions of a hear brake. I do like the fact that they showed the transition of the past of them hustling and keyshia supporting him into the present where the are both now very wealthy. This can be shown in the old broken down cadilac he had to the porshe he is seen in with the Tay Hckerd.

Camera shots include mid and wide shots to show everyone in the present where the man is now succuessful and the gang members in the past to show his hustle. Full body shots and mid shot are taken of keyshia's perfornce to show movement, sex apeal, and to capture the scenery in the back ground.

Effects include a shaking effect to show impact of the door banging and fact paced cuts insync with the music to add exitement, there is shot reverse shot to show the conversation between the boyfriend and her bestfriend.

Her target audience is also women who have been hurt in relationships in the video and the buyers are encourage to buy the reord via itunes link on youtube.

I like the concept of the video as it is similar to my stoyline where the main character of the music video is cheated on by his girlfriend with his bestfriend and I also like the use of flash backs which also be used in our video.

3. R. Kelly ft Usher- Same Girl

  • Genre: R&B
  • Channel: Youtube/Vevo
  • Prod by: R. Kelly
Synopsis

In the song, R. Kelly and Usher talk about a girl they love who turns out to be the same person. In the video, during the first verse, R. Kelly is seen in Chicago calling Usher at his home in Atlanta, telling him about a woman that he is in love with, sparing no details. Usher, taken aback by the similarities to the girl he is presently dating, inquires further about R.Kelly's new love interest and comes to the conclusion that she is, in fact, the "same girl" as R.Kelly's partner. The video is narrative and performance based as seen in the storyline of the video and also by performance shots being taken however the video is very post-modern as it is unrealistic but very engaging.

I like the camera shots used in their conversation in the beginning of the song cutting in-between mid shots, close-ups and side profile shots to show facial expression. I also like the split screen effect they use to show them in different location but to emphasise the conversation they are having on the phone, although it can be a bit irritation because the viewer doesn't know where who to focus on sometimes. Mise en scene shows the luxury's of a well furnished penthouse sweet and the extravagance of a country house villa. This is to show the audience the two main characters are very wealthy however describing the girl the are both seeing as not so wealthy with the type life she lives as a single mother in the ghetto.

Their target audience are R&B lovers and their fans, and also people who have experienced them selves caught in a love triangle. Hence I like the idea that the 2 main characters are close friends, I also like the split focus effect in the song and may use it in my own music video.
